The LaboratoryI'm calling this "laboratory" because I hope to be experimenting and inventing. Miniature engineering.
My background for this is carpentry and art schools: the New York Studio School, the School of Visual Arts, The Hunter MFA Program. In the 90's when I was at the Hunter MFA Program I co-designed, built and then owned several bars in lower Manhattan with Ian Stell. In 2005 I began to make jewelry for my wife Melinda Hackett and became obsessed. 22 karat gold has really special properties. It is the gold alloy that most ancient gold smiths worked with. I only use 18 karat gold for things that have to take a lot of abuse. I work with industrially made sapphires which are the same chemically and structurally to sapphires that occur naturally in volcanos, because I can experiment without prohibitive expense. The industrial sapphires are actually stronger and more heat stable than mined sapphires. So I can make things that are super strong and can only be scratched by other sapphires or diamonds. |
